You know when you fall out of that one particular habit that you were so successful at for a long time, but now you’re not doing it for whatever reason?
Maybe it was
🤧Illness
🛬Travel
🗓️A transition or shift in schedules
For whatever reason the habit that supported your well-being went away.
And with it, life began to feel heavier.
Perhaps physically in your body or maybe just energetically… the weight of the world weighing you down and it feels like life just isn't going as you want it to go.
Like you're pushing against it or through it constantly rather than easily flowing from one thing to the next with purpose.
I know how this feels because when my kids went back to school earlier this week I realized that I had fallen into the same trap.
At some point in the middle of summer I gave up driving in my car to the local state park to walk every Tuesday morning.
That simple choice to put it off or to tell myself I would walk from home or on whatever adventure the kids and I were taking that day was the choice that made life start feeling more like drudgery by the end of summer.
My mind became a blur, super foggy and definitely not as sharp as it usually is. When I connected with the foggy feeling, I would consistently get an image in my mind of a fuzzy blur of colors that had a haze over them.
I felt like I was that old 90’s screensaver.
You know… that one of the ball bouncing from one edge of the screen to the next haphazardly, moving without purpose from one edge to another… no intention, no purpose, just endlessly getting bumped to the next thing by whatever surface I touched.
🙋♀️Rasie your hand if you know that feeling.
But I dropped the kids at the bus on Tuesday morning and with the minor thought of running to Des Moines first for an errand then finding time later in the day for my walk I quickly nixed that and went to the lake.
The moment I stepped out onto my typical walking course, it felt like home.
I was inspired.
So I'm writing this while walking because often some of my best newsletter pieces and blog posts arrive in my brain while walking.
It's the time that my nervous system can settle because
✅ I'm doing something rhythmic
✅ I'm using my muscles, especially my large muscles to move energy around
✅ I'm spending time in nature and being inspired by what I see
✅ And using my voice to speak life authentically by dictating my thoughts (and by doing so, improving Vagal tone because my vocal cords are massaging my Vagus Nerve🤓)
Now had anybody else been here just moments ago, and had seen me stretch my arms out wide as the lake entered my view and yell out “freedom, I am free,” they probably would have thought I was a little cray cray…
🥸Either just escaped from jail
OR
🤸♀️A mom who thrives on also having space for herself and her own interests sans kids that has just sent her kids back to school after a mostly beautiful three and a half months of spending time exclusively with them (something many young moms think isn't possible, but I'm here to tell you it absolutely is...it's how I've lived my entire mothering life).
Tears, literally tears in my eyes as I felt that freedom and the lightness return to my body.
I hadn't realized how much giving up my regular Tuesday morning reset walks at the state park would mean to me.
But being back in nature, and letting my nervous system recalibrate is the exact reason I offer the Rhythms Retreat Series.
As I started writing this, with full intent just to get some thoughts down on paper and use in a later content piece, it occurred to me that all of the things I get out of my Tuesday morning resets at the Elk Rock are what's offered at the Harvest Rhythms Retreat.
- Nature
- Nervous system work
- Connection with self and others without kids
- Space to return to being fully and authentically you
What’s that thing you used to do, but for life reasons you stopped and haven’t started again? Write me back and tell me, I’ll commiserate with you then boost your motivation to get back at it😉.
Cheers,
